The latest Instagram safety update comes after the updates on profile safety in September. Instagram wants to maintain a ‘…positive place for self-expression’. Today they launch a few more tools to keep people safe.
Comment Control Features – Instagram safety update
Commenting is the main form of communication and conversation on Instagram. Comment – while often positive – are sometimes negative and unkind. Instagram previously added the ability to filter out comments based on keywords. However there are two more features in the Instagram safety update that will improve this experience.
1. A rollout that will add a way to turn off comments on any post, will be available to all users in a few weeks.
Tap “Advanced Settings” before you posts and then select “Turn Off Commenting”.
2. They have slowly rolled out the ability to ‘like’ comments by tapping a heart icon next to any comment.
Ability to Remove Followers from Private Accounts
This is an important way for people to feel comfortable sharing with close friends and family. In the past, there was no simple to remove followers. But now, if your account is private, you can remove followers by going to your list of followers and tapping the … menu next to any person’s name. The person will not be notified that you removed them as a follower.
Anonymous Reporting for Self-Injury Posts
Instagram wants to continue to be a place where people can share deeply personal moments. If you see a friends struggling and in need of support, and believe they may be thinking about injuring themselves, you can report anonymously, and Instagram will connect your friend to organizations that offer help.
Instagram has teams working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, around the world to review these reports.
These updates are steps in a great direction for a social-heavy world where connecting beyond digital can be difficult.
